Background of the Study

Disaster preparedness is a critical component of governance, particularly at the local government level, where the direct impact of disasters is often felt. Sanga Local Government in Kaduna State, located in a region prone to both natural and man-made disasters, must have robust mechanisms in place for disaster risk reduction and response. The local government plays a crucial role in disaster preparedness, coordinating resources, creating awareness, and ensuring timely responses. Despite various disaster management frameworks, the capacity of Sanga Local Government to effectively prepare for and respond to disasters remains an area of concern. This study explores the role of Sanga Local Government in disaster preparedness, examining its strategies, challenges, and impact on local resilience to disasters.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Sanga Local Government has faced various disasters, including floods, droughts, and communal conflicts, with devastating effects on the community. While there are national disaster management policies, the role of local government in implementing these policies has often been hampered by limited resources, lack of trained personnel, and insufficient community engagement. This study seeks to examine how Sanga Local Government has handled disaster preparedness, identify the gaps in its disaster management approach, and assess the level of community preparedness in the face of emergencies.
